With the centre approving the name change on Wednesday, Gurgaon has now officially been rechristened as Gurugram.
The announcement was made by Haryana chief minister, Manohar Lal Khattar shortly after he presided over the first meeting of the state-level Swarna Jayanti (golden jubilee) celebrations committee in Panchkula. “From now on, both the city and the district of Gurgaon will be known as Gurugram,” Khattar said.
The chief minister had announced the name change on April 12 this year but it took the Centre six months to approve it. Back in February 2012, the MCG house had passed a resolution to change the name from Gurgaon to Gurugram.
According to mythology, Gurugram derived its name from Guru Dronacharya. The village was supposedly given as ‘gurudakshina’ to him by the Pandavas and hence it came to be known as Gurugram, which in course of time got distorted to Gurgaon.
